Scout the Fire Sky: AI and Sensor Fusion for Aerial Wildfire Ops

Join us for an in depth look at the Northwind RPV Scout project presented by Larry Lichtenberger, General Manager of Northwind RPV and one of the founders of Phenix Solutions. Larry brings commercial pilot experience with over 3000 hours, CFII, Part 107 certification, and a background in advanced aerospace systems including ADS B development for UPS.

The Scout is a lightweight atmospheric sensing platform designed for small unmanned aircraft. It supports wildfire response, precision agriculture, and environmental monitoring through real time microclimate data, wind estimation, and distributed mesh networking. Scout integrates GPS, IMU, barometric and environmental sensors with Kalman filter based fusion to support AI enabled drone swarms, predictive fire modeling, and autonomous flight operations.

Key topics:
• AI supported wildfire response and environmental situational awareness
• Sensor fusion fundamentals and comparison of Kalman filters and PID
• Integration of microclimate sensing in aviation and UAS missions
• Applications in agriculture, forestry, and atmospheric science
• Future capabilities including digital twin fire environments and persistent monitoring

Designed and built in the Pacific Northwest, the Scout showcases how aviation technology and environmental data intersect to create safer, smarter airspace operations.
