About this event

Speaker:  Alan Kellogg

Alan Kellogg, USN Retired and retired Delta Airline pilot, will provide a brief historical summary of Anti-Submarine Warfare, from an aviation aspect, and his participation in it as a former Sikorsky H-3 helicopter pilot flying from the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier.

Alan started his aviation journey when he signed up for the U.S. Navy’s Aviation Reserve Officer Candidate Program at the end of his sophomore year in college in June of 1972.

He completed fixed wing and then rotary wing flight training in October of 1974, flying the T-34, T-28, TH-57 Bell Jet Ranger and the TH-1 Huey.

After earning his Navy wings in October of 1975 he was assigned to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Eight (HS-8) based at Naval Air Station North Island, California. HS-8, known as “The Eightballers” flew the Sikorsky SH-3D/H Sea King in a variety of missions, specializing in anti- submarine warfare. He participated in one Western Pacific cruise from October of 1977 to May of 1978 aboard the USS Kitty Hawk.

Alan continued to fly helicopters for the first half of his 20 year career and then transitioned to the Navy’s logistics transport community for the second half, flying the Beechcraft Super King Air (C-12) and the McDonnell Douglas Skytrain II (C-9B). His reserve C-9 squadron was activated in December of 1990 for Operation Desert Storm where he flew missions throughout Europe and the Middle East.

After retiring from the Navy, Alan was hired by Northwest Airlines where he flew the DC-10, A-330, and both the 747-200 and 400. He retired from Delta Airlines September of 2011.

Currently Alan is a volunteer docent at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum conducting tours of the museum and the Spruce Goose. He attempts to maintain his flying skills as a partner in a Van’s RV-12 based at Twin Oaks Airpark.
